What Is a Futures Prop Firm? Accounts, Platforms and Funding
Understand futures prop firms, evaluations, simulated-funded and live accounts, and how NinjaTrader, Rithmic and connection software fit together.
On this page
A futures prop firm offers access to firm-funded futures trading or programs that pay rewards based on simulated trading results. Prop is short for proprietary. The program defines its qualification rules, account limits and payout terms. A funded account can still be simulated; the label alone does not mean trades reach the live market.
That distinction matters in NinjaTrader: identify the account issuer, account stage and connection provider before choosing a setup guide.
Evaluation, simulated-funded and live accounts
An evaluation measures trading against requirements such as a profit target and loss limits. Read the program’s agreement for its fees, qualification conditions and what account follows an evaluation. NinjaTrader’s overview describes these stages and explains that each partner firm controls its own evaluation and funding decisions.
| Account stage | What it means | What to establish before connecting |
|---|---|---|
| Evaluation | Trading is assessed against the program’s rules. | Which platform and connection provider the purchased account uses. |
| Simulated-funded | Trading remains simulated; the program may allow real payouts under its terms. | The issued trading credentials and simulation environment. A payout does not prove live execution. |
| Real live | The account trades in live markets rather than simulation. | The new account’s provider, credentials and connection instructions. Do not assume evaluation settings carry over. |
Earn2Trade’s LiveSim documentation describes a simulated account with live market data and withdrawals. Live data is not the same as live execution.
The evaluation seller and the funding firm can also be different businesses. Earn2Trade says it verifies completed evaluations and forwards results to a proprietary trading partner, which offers a LiveSim or Live account. Check the company named in the next account’s agreement.
For a firm-specific example, the Legends account-stage guide distinguishes Master Simulation from separately issued real live credentials.
Is NinjaTrader a prop firm?
NinjaTrader provides trading platforms and brokerage services. Its main site describes both. NinjaTrader Prop is the platform service used with independent partner prop firms; the partner chooses its evaluation requirements and any funding offer. NinjaTrader’s partner disclosure states that its technology company does not evaluate, approve or fund live accounts.
These names describe different parts of a trading setup:
| Part | Its role |
|---|---|
| Prop firm or evaluation provider | Sets the program terms and identifies who issues the trading account. |
| Broker | The business responsible for the live brokerage account, distinct from the charting application. |
| Trading platform, such as NinjaTrader | The application where you view charts and enter orders. |
| Account connection, such as Rithmic | The service and credentials used to connect the account to a platform. |
| PropFirmConnector | The add-on that connects Rithmic accounts to NinjaTrader 8 Desktop. It supplies the connection layer; a trade copier is a separate tool. |
A platform logo on a firm’s website is a starting point. The Rithmic, Tradovate and CQG comparison explains how to identify the route for the specific account you receive.
Find the setup for your account
Collect these details from the dashboard or account email:
- Issuer and stage: which company issued the account, and whether it is evaluation, simulated-funded or real live.
- Connection provider: the named service and its trading username, rather than only the website sign-in.
- Platform instructions: the route offered for that account, including activation steps and any required add-on.
Use the firm connection directory to find the matching instructions. If the firm has issued a real live Rithmic account, the live Rithmic transition guide explains what changes in NinjaTrader. Keep the account’s trading and payout agreement separate from the software setup: connecting successfully does not establish payout eligibility.
PropFirmConnector publishes this article and sells the Rithmic connection add-on described on this site.
